Nikko Temples 3

Sanbustdo is a temple that has three giant Budda statues in it - one of which has blue hair.
The giant torii mark the entrance to a shrine.
The 5-storey pagoda doesn't have any foundations. It has a giant pendulum inside which swings during earthquakes and keeps the tower upright. The detail picture gives an idea of what is to come - the main shrine is stunning in its detail.
The sacred stable houses a real horse and carved around the top is the story of life using monkeys. The famous hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil is carved here.

Just some shots from when you go into the temples. The first two are main entrances. Then there is a really old bell and a candelabra. Also a funky dragon fountain

Nikko is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is where the Shogun is burried. (Actually, I think there are three generations buried there). It is set up in the mountains and surrounded by 400 year old cedars (previous entry).
At every temple in Japan you can get your fortune, which you leave tied to a tree (or wire) for the gods to take care of. You can also write your wishes on wooden tablets.
In front of every temple is an incense burner - you waft the incense over your head with your hands for good health or other things.
